Winter Driving Road Safety

Winter is upon us and with it comes problems encountered on a daily basis by millions of drivers in the UK. The hours of daylight over the next few weeks are getting shorter and we should all be aware of the correct use of lights on our vehicles. During rainy and foggy weather in daylight, drivers should use their headlights and when visibility is poor, high intensity rear lighting. Lights should be checked on a regular basis and defective bulbs replaced. Headlamp alignment is one of the areas that are often neglected unless being checked at an MOT service for instance, and adjustment can be necessary following the changing of a headlight bulb.

Road Safety

A common cause of accidents during winter months is losing control of the a car on icy surfaces, which are encountered on many roads, particularly minor roads which frequently do not have the benefit of gritting first thing, major roads having priority. Great care should always be taken in the early morning as black ice can be encountered in places. Obviously control of the car is vital when traction is lost and we would recommend that consideration be given to a skid pan experience, not just for drivers who have recently passed their driving test, but experienced drivers as well.
